As part of its ambitious five-year “roadmap” plan, Tech Launch Arizona – the UA entity focused on advancing UA discoveries into intellectual property, inventions, and technology – has embedded technology licensing managers in innovation-driving colleges around campus.
Lewis Humphreys has joined Eller as its technology transfer embed, a joint appointment with the Office of Technology Transfer. His expertise includes software and IT licensing, and in his new role, he will serve Eller investigators, primarily in the MIS department. He will work directly with faculty to help them protect intellectual property and develop paths to technology commercialization.
Eller MIS has a heritage of innovation. Now entering its 40th anniversary year, the department was among the institutions that pioneered the first MIS curriculum in the country. It has been a top-ten ranked program at both the undergraduate and graduate level since US News & World Report began ranking MIS programs. Key faculty in MIS – including founding department head Jay Nunamaker and Hsinchun Chen, both UA Regents’ Professors – also have successful track records of commercializing their research through UA spinoff companies.
Humphreys advises faculty on copyright, trademark and patent strategies and manages the licensing of University of Arizona intellectual property. Before joining Tech Launch Arizona in January 2013, he was director of social media and community innovation for an Ann Arbor-based think tank focused on re-imagining work and learning, and managed the creation of a web based collaboration portal for Innovation Frontier Arizona. Humphreys has worked throughout North America as a management consultant in economic development, social innovation, marketing, and change management.
He began his management consulting career with Arthur Anderson in Toronto working for large corporate clients implementing enterprise solutions in software, human resources, and executive compensation. Humphreys holds an MA from Dalhousie Universit, and an MSc in Economics from the London School Of Economics. He is the founder and curator of TEDxTucson, the locally organized version of the global TED conferences.
Humphreys can be reached at 520-626-1213 or email@example.com. He holds office hours at Eller on Tuesday mornings.
